Kults sind lustig, schön und haben fast immer ein Happy End! Deshalb machen wir hier (als Teil der Grossen Gegenoffensive) einen Sammelthread für allerlei lustige Kults und sektenähnliche Gruppen.

Ich beginne mit den «Ant Hill Kids» dem Doomsday Kult von Roch Thériault.



Nachdem Thériault aus der Seventh-day Adventist Church Gefolgen ist, hat er 1977 in der Nähe von Quebec seine Komune errichtet, welche er 1984 in die Wälder von Kawartha Lakes umsiedelte.

Einige higligths dieses Kultes waren u.a. das obligatorische vorhersagen de Apokalypse:

In February 1979, when the apocalypse did not occur, people started questioning Thériault's wisdom, but he defended himself saying that time on Earth and in God's world were not parallel, and that therefore it was a miscalculation.

To expand the community as well as keep the members devoted, Thériault married and impregnated all of the women, fathering over 20 children with 9 female members of the group, and by the 1980s there were nearly 40 members. Followers were made to wear identical tunics to represent equality and their devotion to the commune.
If a person wished to leave the commune, Thériault would hit them with either a belt or hammer, suspend them from the ceiling, pluck each of their body hairs individually, or even defecate on them. The Ant Hill Kids raised money for living by selling baked goods, and members who did not bring in enough money were also punished.

Thériault claimed to be a holy being, and started performing unnecessary amateur surgical operations on sick members to demonstrate his healing powers. These "surgeries" included injecting a 94% ethanol solution into stomachs, or performing circumcisions on the children and adults of the group. In 1987, social workers removed 17 of the children from the commune. However, Thériault faced no repercussions for his abusive acts.

In 1989, when follower Solange Boilard complained of an upset stomach, Thériault performed another amateur surgery without anaesthesia. He laid her naked on a table, and punched her in the stomach, then forced a plastic tube into her rectum to perform a crude enema with molasses and olive oil. He cut open her abdomen with a knife and ripped out part of her intestines with his bare hands. Thériault made another member, Gabrielle Lavallée, stitch her up using needle and thread, and had the other women shove a tube down her throat and blow through it. Boilard died the next day from the damage inflicted by the procedures. Claiming to have the power of resurrection, Thériault bored a hole into Boilard's skull with a drill and then had other male members (along with himself) ejaculate into the cavity. When Boilard did not return to life, her corpse was buried a short distance from the Ant Hill Kids' commune.

Lavallée underwent harsh treatment at the Ontario commune during the late 1980s, suffering welding torch burns to her genitals, a hypodermic needle breaking off in her back, and eight of her teeth being forcibly removed. Lavallée attempted to escape from the commune after Thériault cut off parts of her breast and smashed her head in with the blunt side of an axe, but upon her return he removed one of her fingers with wire cutters, pinned her hand to a wooden table with a hunting knife, and then used a cleaver to amputate her arm.

1989 wurde Thériault, auf Grund des Vorfalls, welcher im letzten Quote geschildert ist, verhaftet und verurteilt und 2011 wurde er im Gefängnis ermordet.

Heaven's Gate was an American new religious movement (often described as a cult) whose members committed mass suicide in 1997. It was founded in 1974 and led by Bonnie Nettles (1927–1985) and Marshall Applewhite (1931–1997), known within the movement as Ti and Do, respectively. Nettles and Applewhite first met in 1972 and went on a journey of spiritual discovery, identifying themselves as the two witnesses of Revelation, attracting a following of several hundred people in the mid-1970s. In 1976, a core group of a few dozen members stopped recruiting and instituted a monastic lifestyle.

To kill themselves, members took phenobarbital mixed with apple sauce or pudding and washed it down with vodka. After ingesting the applesauce/pudding mix, they secured plastic bags around their heads to induce asphyxiation. All 39 were dressed in identical black shirts and sweat pants, brand new black-and-white Nike Decades athletic shoes, and armband patches reading "Heaven's Gate Away Team" (one of many instances of the group's use of the nomenclature of the fictional universe of Star Trek)

In April 1976, the group stopped recruiting and became reclusive, and instituted a rigid set of behavioral guidelines, including banning sexual activity and the use of drugs. Applewhite and Nettles also solidified their temporal and religious authority over the group. Benjamin Zeller described the movement as having transformed "from a loosely organised social group to a centralized religious movement comparable to a roving monastery"

Initially, the group had been told that they would be biologically and chemically transformed into extraterrestrial beings and would be transported aboard a spacecraft, which would come to Earth and take them to heaven - referred to as the "Next Level". When Bonnie Lou Nettles (Ti) died of cancer in 1985, the group's doctrine was confounded because Nettles was allegedly chosen by the Next Level to be a messenger on Earth, yet her body had died instead of leaving physically to outer space. Their belief system was then revised to include the leaving of consciousness from the body as equivalent to leaving the Earth in a spacecraft.

Das bemerkenswerte an diesem überaus kuhlen Kult war, dass sie sich ab einem gewissen Punkt fast auschliesslich dadurch finanzierten, dass ein grossteil der Member Webentwickler wurden und unter dem Namen "Higher Source" Webseiten programierten.

Die Faisrachmanisten in Tatarstan, Russland

In 2012 ist die muslimische Sekte des zum Zeitpunkt 83-jährigen Faisrachman Satarow durch die Presse bekannt geworden. Der Typ ist in Baschkortostan geboren, eine russische Republik im äussersten Osten von Europa, und war in den 70er Jahren dort Mufti unter dem Namen Imam Ufa. In den 80er Jahren hat er sich dann selbst zum Propheten ernannt, zuerst mit 7 Anhängern, und bis nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion sind es dann ca. 80 geworden.

Er erzählte, er habe Visionen, in denen Allah mit ihm spricht. Seine Offenbarungen schrieb Satarow auf Tatarisch und Arabisch auf, diese Texte und der Koran waren die einzige erlaubte Lektüre für seine Anhänger. 1996 kaufte einer seiner Schüler ein Grundstück in Kasan, um dort angeblich eine religiöse Schule zu bauen, das Gelände wurde für heilig erklärt. Dorthin zogen die Mitglieder der Sekte und begannen mit dem Bau eines Bunkers. Seit 2001 schotteten sie sich von der Außenwelt fast komplett ab, nur wenige durften das Gelände verlassen, und auch nur, wenn es absolut notwendig war.

Jeder, der der Sekte beitrat, sollte einen Eid ablegen und sich Satarow völlig unterwerfen. Die staatlichen Gesetze, aber auch die Regeln des klassischen Islams wurden für nichtig erklärt, Anhänger anderer Religionen wurden für Feinde gehalten. Die verstorbenen Sektenmitglieder wurden nicht auf den muslimischen Friedhöfen, sondern in den umliegenden Feldern beigesetzt.

2004 wurde das Haus aufgrund von Schulden von Strom und Wasser abgeschnitten. Daraufhin kaufte die Kommune einen Dieselstromgenerator und grub auf dem Grundstück einen Brunnen. Sie hatten ein Auto und einen Kühlschrank für alle Mitglieder. Im Haus gab es ein Radio, doch Zugang zu den Nachrichten hatte nur ein ausgewählter Kreis. Angeblich sollten die Mitglieder ihr ganzes Eigentum für die Sekte spenden.

Eine Videoaufnahme der russischen Polizei zeigt eine schmutzige Treppe, die in die Dunkelheit des Kellers führt. Dort beginnt ein unterirdisches Labyrinth aus Dutzenden Kammern. Acht Ebenen, kein Licht, keine Ventilation.

Die Kinder wuchsen im Keller auf, waren nie beim Arzt und besuchten keine Schule. Einige von ihnen haben noch nie in ihrem Leben Tageslicht gesehen. Das kleinste Kind war nur fünf Monate, der älteste 17 Jahre alt.

Das unterirdische Labyrinth wurde nur zufällig entdeckt. Am 19. Juli wurde der Mufti der Republik Tatarstan, Ildus Faisow, bei einem Attentat schwer verletzt, sein Stellvertreter wurde am gleichen Tag ermordet. Die Staatsanwaltschaft leitete Ermittlungen ein, verdächtigt wurden radikalislamische Gruppen. Die Republik Tatarstan galt in Russland lange als Hochburg des gemäßigten Islams, auch Faisow war als Gegner von radikalen Strömungen bekannt. Letzte Woche tauchte im Internet ein Video auf, in dem sich „Mudschahedin von Tatarstan“ zu den Anschlägen gegen „Feinde Allahs“ bekennen.

13 Kinder wurden mit ihren Müttern ins Krankenhaus gebracht, einige von ihnen leiden an Anämie und Tuberkulose. Eine 17-jährige Frau war schwanger, eine andere Frau hat während der Durchsuchung eine Fehlgeburt erlitten.

Die Ärzte erzählen, dass die Patienten sich weigern, Medikamente zu nehmen, außerdem nehmen sie nur das Essen zu sich, das ihre Verwandte aus der Gemeinde bringen. Einige Kinder wurden bereits in Kinderheimen untergebracht, sie müssen sich jetzt neu sozialisieren.

Offenbar wusste man bereits lange über die Existenz der Sekte. Der ermordete stellvertretende Mufti, Waliulla Jakupow, äußerte sich 2007 dazu: "Faisrachmanisten haben mit dem Islam nicht zu tun, sie haben ihren eigenen Propheten Satarow.

Uns, echte Muslime, halten sie für ungläubig. Wir streiten uns nicht mit ihnen, das ist einfach eine andere Religion, sie sollen leben, wie sie wollen". Er erwähnte die Sekte in mehreren Büchern über den Islam in Tatarstan.

In der Republik wurden Satarow und seine Anhänger für geistig krank gehalten, es wurde sogar bekannt, dass sie mit Kindern in seinem Haus abgeschottet von der Welt leben. Warum allerdings die Behörden so lange untätig blieben, ist zunächst ungeklärt.

Die Sonnentempler (französisch: Ordre du Temple Solaire (O.T.S.)) waren eine fanatisch weltablehnende, international aktive Geheimgesellschaft in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie verstanden sich als moderner Rosenkreuzer-Orden und bezogen sich auf die Tempelritter. Die Sonnentempler sorgten als apokalyptisch ausgerichtete Sekte weltweit für Aufsehen, als 74 Mitglieder bei vier kollektiven rituellen Mord- und Suizid-Handlungen in den Jahren 1994, 1995 und 1997 ums Leben kamen. „Die Sonnentempler“ wurden unter dem offiziellen Namen Ordre International Chevaleresque De Tradition Solaire von Joseph Di Mambro und Luc Jouret gegründet.

Di Mambro benutzte für Beweiszwecke wie der Scientology-Gründer Ron Hubbard einen „Spektrograph“ genannten Messapparat zur Indoktrination. Dieses Gerät habe es 33 Meistern ermöglicht, die Aura und Schwingungen aller Kultmitglieder zu bilanzieren. Durch die tiefenpsychologischen Manipulationstechniken der Sektenleitung bildeten sich kollektive Wahnvorstellungen, Realitätsverluste, Bewusstseinsstörungen und kindliche Paradiesvisionen heraus. Konditioniert durch die radikale Bewusstseinskontrolle wurden die Ordensanhänger in eine tödliche Scheinwelt, in die emotionale Regression und zusehends in eine Endzeitneurose getrieben

Zwischen 1979 und 1981 übernahmen Luc Jouret und Joseph Di Mambro die Führung des Sonnentempler-Ordens. Beide beanspruchten eine „gottähnliche“ Position für sich und umgaben sich mit dem Nimbus, okkulte „Übermenschen“ zu sein.

1994, 1995 und 1997 kamen insgesamt 74 Sonnentempler bei kollektiven Mord- und Suizid-Aktionen ums Leben, teils betäubt und erschossen, teils vergiftet, teils durch eigene Hand. Die juristischen Tatbestände lauteten Mord, Tötung auf Verlangen und Selbsttötung. Nach dem Tod der beiden Sektenführer Di Mambro und Jouret wurde Tabachnik, dessen Ehefrau bei den „Selbstmorden“ von 1994 ums Leben kam, verdächtigt, der neue Großmeister der Sonnentempler zu sein.

In der Nacht zum 5. Oktober 1994 kamen bei Morden und Selbstmorden insgesamt 48 Mitglieder der Sonnentempler ums Leben. Die Obduktion ergab, dass davon 15 Menschen Selbstmord begingen, sieben als „Verräter“ hingerichtet wurden und man dem Rest beim Sterben „half“.
In einem Gehöft des Weilers Cheiry im Schweizer Kanton Freiburg fand die Freiwillige Feuerwehr 23 in goldene und weiße Kultgewänder gehüllte Tote, 18 von ihnen kreisförmig ausgerichtet, als symbolisierten sie Sonnenstrahlen. Die Leichen, darunter Tabachniks erste Frau, lagen in einer Art Kapelle mit Spiegelwänden und leuchtendroten Stoffbahnen unter einem Christusgemälde. Einige Köpfe waren in Müllsacke gehüllt, andere trugen Talare.

Jouret und Di Mambro fuhren nach dem Massaker in Cheiry nach Granges-sur-Salvan im Schweizer Kanton Wallis, etwa 50 Kilometer südlich von Montreux, wo drei Stunden später ein Chalet brannte. Am Morgen des 6. Oktober fand die Feuerwehr in den Trümmern die verkohlten Überreste von 25 Menschen, darunter fünf Kinder und die Führungsriege um Jouret und Di Mambro, sein „kosmisches Kind“ Emmanuelle und dessen schweizerische Mutter Dominique Bellaton.Das ehemalige Mitglied Thierry Huguenin warnte vor weiteren Massakern bei den Sonnentemplern.

Die Branch Davidians

The Branch Davidians (or the General Association of Branch Davidian Seventh-day Adventists) are an apocalyptic cult founded in 1955 by Benjamin Roden. They regard themselves as a continuation of the General Association of Davidian Seventh-Day Adventists, established by Victor Houteff in 1935.

Houteff, a Bulgarian immigrant and a Seventh-day Adventist, wrote a series of tracts titled the "Shepherd's Rod", which called for the reform of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. After his ideas were rejected by Adventist leaders, Houteff and his followers formed the group that later became known as "Davidians" and some of them moved onto a tract of land outside and west of Waco, Texas, United States, where they built a community called the Mount Carmel Center, which served as the headquarters for the movement. After Houteff's death in 1955, his wife Florence took control of the Davidian organization. That same year, Roden (a follower of Houteff), proclaimed what he believed to be a new message from God and wrote a series of letters presenting it to Davidians. He signed these letters "The Branch" believing that to be the new name Jesus had taken (according to biblical prophecies such as Revelation 3:12 and Zechariah 6:12-13) to reflect a new stage of his work in the heavenly sanctuary. Those who accepted Roden's teachings became known as Branch Davidians Seventh Day Adventists.

The Waco siege, also known as the Waco massacre, was the siege by U.S. federal government and Texas state law enforcement officials of a compound belonging to the religious cult known as the Branch Davidians between February 28 and April 19, 1993. The Branch Davidians, led by David Koresh, were headquartered at Mount Carmel Center ranch in the community of Axtell, Texas,13 miles (21 kilometers) northeast of Waco. Suspecting the group of stockpiling illegal weapons, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) obtained a search warrant for the compound and arrest warrants for Koresh and several of the group's members.

The ATF had planned a sudden daylight raid of the ranch in order to serve these warrants, intending to quickly control the situation and reduce the risk to all parties that was associated with the large cache of modified weapons and explosive devices the Davidians had available. Any advantage of surprise was lost when a KWTX-TV reporter who had been tipped off about the raid asked for directions from a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier who was coincidentally Koresh's brother-in-law. Thus, the group's members were fully armed and prepared; an intense gunfight erupted, resulting in the deaths of four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians. Upon the ATF's entering of the property and failure to execute the search warrant, a siege was initiated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation , during which negotiations between the parties attempted to reach a compromise. After 51 days, on April 19, 1993, the FBI launched a tear gas attack in an attempt to force the Branch Davidians out of the compound's buildings. Shortly thereafter, the Mount Carmel Center became engulfed in flames. The fire and the reaction to the final attack within the group resulted in the deaths of 76 Branch Davidians, including 25 children, two pregnant women, and David Koresh. In total, the 51-day siege resulted in the deaths of four federal agents and 82 Branch Davidians, 28 of whom were children.

The Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ, originally Peoples Temple Full Gospel Church and commonly shortened to Peoples Temple, was an American new religious organization which existed between 1954 and 1978 and was affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Founded by Jim Jones in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Peoples Temple spread a message that combined elements of Christianity with communist and socialist ideology, with an emphasis on racial equality. After Jones moved the group to California in the 1960s and established several locations throughout the state, including its headquarters in San Francisco, the Temple forged ties with many left-wing political figures and claimed to have 20,000 members (though 3,000–5,000 is more likely).

The Temple is best known for the events of November 18, 1978, in Guyana, when 909 people died in a mass suicide and mass murder at its remote settlement, named "Jonestown", as well as the murders of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan and members of his visiting delegation at the nearby Port Kaituma airstrip. The incident at Jonestown resulted in the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Because of the killings in Guyana, the Temple is regarded by scholars and by popular view as a destructive cult.

Kidwelly sex cult

The Kidwelly sex cult is the common name given to a cult that operated in the Welsh town of Kidwelly that raped children for decades until its perpetrators were arrested in 2010. Known by its members as simply "The Church", its leader Colin Batley psychologically terrorised and coerced vulnerable children into performing sexual acts, by using death threats and brainwashing. Batley, three female members, and a second man were convicted of child sex offences in 2011 and jailed.

The cult sexually exploited vulnerable teenagers, using occult practices and literature as a means of justifying its abuse, and of brainwashing its victims. It was led by Colin Batley and his wife, as well as three other women. Its sexual abuse against children spanned several decades, and was carried out first in London, then in Kidwelly in southwest Wales.

The five members who went on trial departed from London for a single Kidwelly street in the 1990s. The leader, Colin Batley, moved first, followed by Shelly Millar, Batley's mistress, Jacqueline Marling, and their partners. Batley and three of the four female defendants were convicted of sexual offences. Colin Batley[ and the four female defendants indicated their membership with an ancient "Egyptian eye" tattoo of Horus, a hawk-headed god on their arms, and by collecting ancient Egyptian religious objects.

The cult targeted troubled, impressionable minors, forcing them to undergo an initiation ceremony that ended with sex with an adult. Children were intimidated into participating with threats of murder. One girl testified that after this ceremony (which started with Batley preaching about the occult and finished with sex), she was regularly coerced into having sex with Colin Batley at his house, and with strangers at satanic orgies. In tears, she testified, "I did it because I was told to by Colin". A victim explained, "Colin knew how to manipulate you, to make you believe anything he said". Children also obeyed his demands for sex out of "fear of angering the Gods." Batley had Rottweiler dogs that were "vicious to everyone".

The sexual abuse was often preceded with satanic ceremonies in which passages from the occultist Aleister Crowley's books The Book of the Law, The Book of Magick, and Equinox of the Gods were read out. One ceremony featured an altar with salted bread, a chalice of red wine, and an incense burner. At the end of these satanic ceremonies, members "became skyclad", meaning they disrobed, and had sex.

A neighbour, John Wheatland, claimed that while working in his garden, he once saw a girl in her early teens "done up to look like a film star", who asked him whether he wanted sex. He also stated that he heard a victim crying every night.

Colin Batley's son Damian died on 1 February 2008, when he accidentally hanged himself during a sex act. He filmed the fatal accident on his mobile phone. An inquest was told he was found naked and hanging.

A neighbour said Damian's father (Batley) was "laughing and joking like he didn’t have a care in the world" on the day of the funeral, which "no normal person could comprehend".

Die Good News International Ministries von Paul Nthenge Mackenzie

The Good News International Ministries (GNIM), or Good News International Church, commonly referred to as the Shakahola cult and previously referred to as the Servant P. N. Mackenzie Ministries, is a new religious movement which was based in Shakahola, Kilifi County, Kenya, and was founded by Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and his first wife in 2003.

GNIM attracted international attention in April 2023 when it was revealed that Mackenzie had allegedly instructed members to starve themselves en masse to "meet Jesus," which has resulted in the deaths of over 400 people. The group, widely described as a cult, is adamantly anti-Western, with amenities such as health care, education, and sports being dismissed as "evils of western life" and with Mackenzie condemning the United States, the United Nations, and the Catholic Church as "tools of Satan". The group also devotes much of its teachings to the end times. They are purportedly followers of the End-Time Message of William Branham. Homicide detectives working on the case alleged the group was radicalized by Branham's teachings, leading to their deaths. The group has been described as a doomsday cult.

Mackenzie founded the GNIM in 2003 and accumulated a sizable following, largely due to convincing his followers that he could speak directly with God. Beginning in the late 2010s, Mackenzie's church began to receive a renewed wave of scrutiny regarding the internal practices of the organization. In 2017, Mackenzie and his wife faced several charges relating to the church. He was chastised for inciting students to abandon their education after denouncing it as "ungodly", as well as radicalizing and denying medical care to the children afterwards; several children died as a result and, in 2017, 93 children were rescued by government authorities from the group. After another arrest in 2019, he departed Malindi and headed to the Shakahola forest, where the mass starvation occurred in 2023.

Korpela movement!

The Korpela movement, or Siikavaara sect, was a religious sect started by Laestadian preacher Toivo Korpela in Sweden during the 1920s. It saw its decline later during the next decade as its practices involved heavy drinking and unconventional sexual activities toward the end of its existence, which subsequently led to the conviction of 60 of its followers.

Following the exile of Korpela, his two closest preachers, Sigurd Siikavaara and Arthur Niemi began to introduce the belief that a flying ark would bring 666 true believers to Palestine and that the last 1,335 days of the world had begun, one date set for the arrival of the ark that was reported by newspapers at the time was March 14, 1935. It was later taught that the ark would not be an actual physical ark, but the spirit of Christ, granted to the followers of the Korpela movement.

Following Siikavaara and Niemi's brief confinement to mental asylums the beliefs and practices changed focus; Siikavaara claimed to have been invested with the spirit of the prophets and Christ, essentially proclaiming divine status, and gave the followers of the movement forgiveness for their sins, thus enabling them to engage in swearing, drinking, gambling and hitherto-prohibited sexual rituals. Upon his arrest in 1939, Siikavaara was an alcoholic and had allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse with 30 women other than his wife.
